The Dutchman controlled the race at the Shanghai International Circuit, skillfully navigating through a Virtual Safety Car period and two full Safety Car interventions. He maintained his composure at the front while chaos unfolded behind him.
Lando Norris of McLaren showcased an impressive performance, capitalizing on strategic opportunities during the race. With just one pit stop, Norris managed to leapfrog Sergio Perez into second place, holding onto the position until the checkered flag.
Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz followed closely behind in fourth and fifth places respectively. Despite tire concerns towards the end, Leclerc managed to secure a strong finish. George Russell led the Mercedes charge, finishing in sixth position.
Fernando Alonso adopted an off-set strategy, opting for soft tires during a mid-race pit stop under the Safety Car. This decision propelled him to a remarkable recovery from 12th to seventh place, overtaking McLaren’s Oscar Piastri in the process.
Lewis Hamilton, after a challenging start and some early struggles with tires, fought his way through the field with strategic overtakes to finish ninth. Nico Hulkenberg of Haas claimed the final point in the race.
Further down the field, Alpine’s Esteban Ocon and AlphaTauri’s Pierre Gasly finished in 11th and 12th places respectively, sandwiching the Williams of Alex Albon. Kick Sauber’s Zhou Guanyu made history as the first Chinese driver to compete at home, crossing the line in 14th place.
However, Lance Stroll faced penalties for a collision with Daniel Ricciardo and finished 15th, followed by Kevin Magnussen in 16th after a collision with Yuki Tsunoda. Logan Sargeant concluded the race in 17th place.
Valtteri Bottas retired due to an apparent engine issue, causing the first Safety Car period. Verstappen’s victory extends his lead in the drivers’ standings, with Perez trailing by 25 points.
